Betting big on the Indian market, Internet giant Yahoo! plans to host content in six regional languages, besides Hindi and English, by next year. “We are looking for partners.

By next year, we plan to have content in up to six regional languages,” Yahoo! India Managing Director Arun Tadanki said on the sidelines of the India Economic Summit here today. At present, Yahoo! India has a partnership with publishing house Dainik Jagran for offering content in Hindi.

“We see huge opportunity in regional language content. Our Hindi news traffic had taken over the traffic we see for news in English,” he added.

There are about 50 million Internet users in India, which is likely to go up to 240 million in the next five years. Tadanki said 73 per cent of all Indian Internet users have access to Yahoo!, so regional content is very important to the company.

Poken is a social business card conceived to accommodate the growing contact details of people in this age of social media networking. In other words, as one blogger Amy Palko put it, it makes it easier for you to link your online profiles with people you meet offline.

Produced by a Swiss-based company Poken S.A., each device, mostly animated toons, comes with a palm that ‘high fours’ the other Poken devices to exchange their contact cards by holding them about 0.5 inches apart.

Once the data transfer through the proprietary short range high frequency, wireless communication Near Field Communication technology is complete, the palms glow green. Apart from supporting the usual telephone, URL(s), location and email addresses, a Poken contact card could be configured to more than 40 social networking sites. Orkut, India’s biggest social networking site, does not figure on the list.

“Although Orkut is not supported with the device initially, it can be configured later,” says Naidu Darapaneni, founder-CEO of meraevents.com, the authorised reseller for Indian market.

Harvard researchers, using the iPhone to track people’s moods, have found a correlation between daydreaming and unhappiness.

The app, aptly named “Track Your Happiness,” contacts iPhone users at random times during the day to ask how they’re feeling and what they are doing while answering these questions. Users have the option to decide when and how often they’ll be notified.

The researchers’ findings, published in the journal Science, were based on samples from 2,250 adults. Out of those surveyed, 58.8% were male, and 73.9% of them reside in the U.S. The mean age of those involved in the survey was 34. As DISCOVER reports, responders said they were daydreaming 46.9% of the time when the iPhone rang to check in on their thoughts. And those who said they were daydreaming were more likely to reveal that they were feeling unhappy.

This will be a good news for people that find themselves as a short on time and or patience people. Google has got a something new to make your next Web search even faster than it used to be. Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Rice University are developing an electronic notepad that consumes very little energy. This device, called I-slate may soon allow some of the estimated 100 million Indian children who attend schools without electricity to have access to an electronic notepad. I-Slate , Palem’s brainchild, is in development at Institute of Sustainable and Applied Infodynamics (ISAID) which is based at NTU. The first prototypes of the I-slate , which were built by a team that included three Rice undergraduates, are set to undergo their second round of tests in India later this month. Palem, who directs ISAID, said the device is the first of a series of electronic notepads being built around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of the electricity of today’s processors.

The chips are under development in partnership between ISAID and Switzerland’s Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology, the chips will make it possible for the I-slate to run on solar power from panels similar to those used in hand-held calculators.

The I-slate began to take shape over the summer, and early prototypes were introduced in tests at a school near Hyderabad in early August.

“Developing an electronic notepad that is green, requires very little energy to operate and that could even run on solar energy in future is in line with NTU’s emphasis on sustain ability research,” said NTU President Su Guaning.

“The research will not just help in the sustainability of our planet but the development of such sustainable, low-cost technologies will also help the poorer communities in the world to close the digital divide. It will be life-changing and it will help to improve lives.”
