Purpose:

In some applications, such as iChat, iPhoto, Mail, Safari, and TextEdit, you can automatically replace text with other text or symbols. (In the application, Control-click and choose Substitutions -> Text Replacement, or in some applications, you can also choose Edit -> Substitutions -> Text Replacement.) Select an item in this list to have it replaced with the symbol or alternate text to the right of it. For example, if you select the (c) checkbox and text substitution features are turned on in the application you’re using, when you type (c) it will automatically be replaced with © in your document.

A master password is a “Safety net” password. It lets you unlock any account on your computer. An administrator can use the master password to reset the login password of any user even if their account is firewall protected. This can save the data of a user who forgets their login password.

FileVault secures your home folder by encrypting its contents. It automatically encrypts and decrypts your files while you’re using them. The file encryption is done using your login password. So if you forget the login password or don’t know the master password, then your data will be lost.

We can use the ‘Expose’ pane of ‘Expose and Spaces’ preferences to specify shortcuts for showing and hiding windows or the desktop. These settings also determine shortcuts for showing and hiding Dashboard, and for starting or disabling your screen saver or putting the display to sleep.

Sophos has released a free antivirus product for consumers using Mac OS: Sophos Anti-Virus Home Edition for Mac. Although commercial antivirus products for Macs have been available for some time, Sophos’ offer is one of the very few free ones.
The Internet security firm took its existing enterprise antivirus software and slimmed it down to reduce complexity. Interestingly, the company has no plans to release an equivalent free version for Windows. Windows threats are in the millions while the number of strains of Mac malware is in the thousands.

Apple has just issued a statement advertising iOS 4.2, due in November. Apart from the fact it’ll be the first iOS version released simultaneously for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, we now know the official name of a new wireless printing capability.

It’s to be called AirPrint, Apple wrote, and will let you wirelessly beam text, photos, and graphics to the supported printers “without the need to install drivers or download software.”
